Taxed

Anyone who somehow manages to find this tiny little blog might be wondering why the author hasn't posted anything since Easter. The truth? I haven't had a day off since. That includes weekends. Why might that be? Well, as Benjamin Franklin once said, "In this world nothing is certain but death and taxes," and I am involved with the latter.

My job is with the family accountant, mostly as a favor. This time of year, like with probably all the accountants in the United States, is akin to the Christmas season for the shopping malls. Likely 75% of their business occurs within the first 4.5 months of the year, and for my employer, it is no different.

Usually, my employer has a young woman (who lives a few miles closer to his office than me) come in and man the front desk for him. She would sit and look busy while taking phone messages, running the fax and copy machines, and playing Solitaire. Unfortunately, a number of months before tax season, she became pregnant, and her due date falls somewhere around the 15th of April. That is where I come in.

I have been working for this man for a number of years, but only on an occasional basis until recently. At first, the employment was sporadic, but has exponentially grown in frequency. At this point, the final week leading up to the big 1-5, I am to come in for work every day after class. I'm guessing that my work period on Friday night might run until the very last second. Wish me luck.........
